Is This Job Real? A Practical Checklist Before You Apply
The question "is this job real?" is harder than it should be. Scams have become more polished, job boards syndicate listings across sites, and real companies sometimes leave old roles online long after hiring has paused.
The goal is not to become a detective. The goal is to avoid sending personal information or spending serious tailoring time on a posting that does not deserve it.
Start With the Apply Path
A real job should usually lead back to an employer careers page, an established ATS like Greenhouse or Lever, or a known staffing firm with clear client context. Be careful when a posting asks you to apply through a random form, messaging app, personal email, or file-sharing link.
Domain alignment matters. If the company is called Acme Robotics, an email from acme-robotics.com is much more credible than a Gmail address using the company name. Scammers rely on urgency and brand confusion.
Check the Company Trail
Search the company name plus the exact job title. Look for:
- A matching careers-page role
- Recent company activity
- Employee profiles that match the claimed team
- A real company domain
- Consistent location and salary details
If the company exists but the role does not, that does not always mean scam. It may mean the board listing is stale or syndicated. Treat that as a verification step before applying.
Watch for Unsafe Requests
No legitimate employer should ask you to pay for equipment, training, background checks, or onboarding. Be especially careful if a "recruiter" moves quickly to bank details, tax documents, direct deposit forms, or identity documents before a formal offer.
High pay for very little experience is another warning sign. So is pressure to decide immediately.
Use a Two-Step Application Habit
First, verify the role. Second, tailor your resume. Reversing that order wastes time and can expose personal data.
If the posting passes the basic checks, then it is worth comparing your resume against the job description. If it fails, save your energy for a role with a cleaner hiring path.

Real jobs leave a trail: aligned domains, credible apply paths, specific responsibilities, and consistent company evidence. If the trail is weak, verify before you apply.
